Swinging in the Clouds - When Will I Sail? Julia Curylo and Emilia Bogucka: Plock Art Gallery
On October 6 at the Płock Art Gallery hosted the opening of the exhibition of Julia Curyło's paintings and Emilia Bogucka's sculptures, Swinging in the Clouds - When Will I Sail?. The exhibition consists of works by two artists, presenting their latest achievements in the field of art. It is a meeting point of a painter and a sculptor work whose found common understanding, creating a dialogue between painting and sculpture, focused on the issue of broadly understood femininity, located somewhere between the objective world and dreams.
The works presented at the exhibition are a formally diverse collection of works from the last years of the artists' work. Among them, we can see paintings by Julia Curylo from the series "Women and Legends" and "Cosmogonies" and sculptures by Emilia Bogucka from the series: "Floating", "Ephemeral", "Dancing", "Welcome Sculpture", "Swimmers" and "Someday I Will Sail Away". ".
Julia Curylo, whose works we present in our gallery, is an artist with significant achievements, in her works she combines an unconventional mix of styles that could be called "neo-pop-art surrealism". Her large-format works emanate with vivid colors and emotional content. The painter in in the latest works from the "Women and Legends" series, she focuses on presenting her vision of femininity, referring to the history of art and philosophy. However, in the works from the "Cosmic" series, the artist builds her own cosmogony, juxtaposing the religious image of the world with its scientific vision and discoveries in the field of astrophysics. Her works, although full of humor and apparent kitsch, hide a deep feminist message under the surface, flowing directly from the methods she uses. iconography. Julia Curyło has a masterful ability to visually show the clash of contemporary everyday reality with the fantasy world. In an atmosphere of understatement, he creates combinations of elements that seemingly do not match each other in terms of meaning: baroque putti, human and animal skulls, the above-mentioned balloons in the shape of toy animals, elements of Marian iconography, the silhouette of an astronaut watching like a "holy guardian" on the border of worlds - the earthly and the undiscovered abyss of space. Emilia Bogucka's sculptural work is the result of searching for a new way of depicting the form of the human body and what is elusive and immaterial in it. The artist's intention is to present what is unreal and spiritual in a human form. Emilia Bogucka explores the relationship between materiality and spirituality, tradition and modernity, creating sculptures of subtle sensuality and abstract form. Her ephemeral works bring to mind human shapes with varied physical expression and a palpable inner mood. The artist focuses on conveying the impression of transience and lightness of the sculpted form. Thanks to this, he achieves the effect of gentleness of the created characters. The exhibition by Julia Curyło and Emilia Bogucka is an attempt to answer questions about the place of contemporary art in the world around us. How far can we push the boundaries of artistic expression? What are the relations between references to tradition and the search for new forms? What roles does art play in reflecting and shaping our dreams and realities?
